Meerut City

Meerut (Hindi: मेरठ, Urdu: میرٹھ) Meerut.ogg pronunciation is a metropolitan city and a municipal corporation in Meerut district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the 16th largest metropolitan area in India and the 25th largest city in India. Meerut ranks 3rd in the total slum area population in the country after Mumbai and Faridabad repectively. Meerut ranks 4th in terms of population in Uttar Pradesh. It is the 4th biggest city in U.P. It is an ancient city located 56 km (34 miles) north-east of New Delhi. Meerut also has one of the biggest army garrisons/cantonments in this part of the country. It is famous for its scissors and Gazak. Meerut is also the sports capital of India. The 1857 Indian independence drive started from here. According to the Government of India, the district Meerut is one of the Minority Concentrated District in India on the basis of the 2001 census data on population, socio-economic indicators and basic amenities indicators[
